Data shows service members’ representation in the military has shifted.
The Defense Department recently published the 2022 Demographics Profile of the Military Community, revealing a 2.7 percent decrease in the number of service members compared to the previous year, with a total of 2,077,630 active-duty and selected reserve personnel. The report indicated a slight increase in the percentage of women in the military. Since 2005, active-duty military women have increased by 2.9 percent, and selected reserve women have risen by 4.4 percent.
“The Demographics Profile of the Military Community and research conducted by the Department ensures we have the quality data we need to understand and respond to the ever-changing needs of our service members and their families,” said Military Community and Family Policy Deputy Assistant Secretary Patricia Montes Barron. “The updated demographic data and trends help the Department assess and tailor our policies and programs to best support our Service members and their families.”
